Most Americans Are Unaware They Lack Adequate Life Insurance Protection
Almost one-third of Americans age 18 and over
have no life insurance protection. Of those households that
do have protection, 30 percent have coverage that's less than
one time their annual income. Disturbingly, 76 percent of those
households with life insurance protection that's less than their
annual income thought that the amount of coverage was adequate.
The survey, commissioned by MetLife and conducted by Roper ASWLLC,
polled a random, representative sample of U.S. Households.
The Survey also revealed alarming statistics
concerning the "prime needs segment" -- those full-time employees
with dependents, such as a non-working spouse or minor children.
Only 64 percent of this demographic have any type of life insurance
protection. Of those that do have the coverage, 58 percent revealed
that the amount of coverage is less than three times their household
income. The majority of those with this minimal coverage also
reported that they believed the amount of coverage was adequate.
